NEW LESSON PLAN RESOURCES
HAEA has just launched its first two sets of educational materials. These made-in-B.C. resources each contain a slideshow presentation and a companion study unit. Units on The Holocaust and The History of Antisemitism have been added to our curriculum resource pages. A third unit, The Jewish People, will be added very soon
These extensive educational resources will ensure educators can effectively teach these complex, multi-faced topics individually or as a series.
Registration is now open for our in-person Pro-D Day Feb. 13 in Vancouver that will feature Holocaust and Antisemitism topics and connect teachers with HAEA developed teaching tools.
The all-day session includes lunch with the $26 registration fee.

HAEA Executive
ABOUT HAEA
With the Holocaust becoming mandatory learning in B.C., there is a greater need for strong tools and training so that teachers can successfully bring it to students. HAEA is collecting and sharing appropriate lesson plans, resources, and supports for educators, and is working on developing its own materials. As well, we will bring together teachers for professional development opportunities.
HAEA spoke with teachers at the 12th Biennial Shafron Teachers’ Conference at the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre.
We asked these teachers why it is important to teach the Holocaust, and how they approach the subject.
We are sharing their insights and ideas to help teachers bring lessons about the Holocaust to their classrooms.
Even 80 years after the Holocaust there are new stories to be told about the impacts of the Shoah and their aftermaths.
HAEA along with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs presented the story of Akira Kitade from Japan, and his efforts to trace the stories of seven Sugihara survivors and how they were able to leave Europe for new lives.
Akira Kitade, author of Emerging Heroes: WWII Era Diplomats, Jewish Refugees and Escape to Japan, spoke at a March 26 event at the Jewish Community Centre in Vancouver. Mr. Kitade tells his story of the discovery of the story of the seven survivors discovered from their photos in a scrapbook.
Both the video here, and the complete session video, can be used in your classroom to show the human impacts of the Holocaust and a small glimpse of what was saved by rescuing individuals.
Event details and full event video are here.
The story of Emerging Heroes can also be at Academic Studies Press.
